Eight (out of the ten) men
captured at the Dripsey ambush (See Jan-28-21/4) are
brought before a court martial in Victoria Barracks in Cork City.

Before
the court are Patrick O'Mahony, Berrings;
Timothy McCarthy, Fornaught; Thomas O'Brien, Dripsey; Jeremiah O'Callaghan, Aghabullogue;
Daniel O'Callaghan, Dripsey; John Lyons, Aghabullogue; Eugene Langtry, Kilabbey
and Denis Sheehan, Dereen, Coachford.
They were charged with levying war against His Majesty which was a charge which
carried the death penalty if convicted. The court adjourned until
February 8th – see See Feb-08 to 10-21/1.
Of
the other two men captured after the Dripsey ambush,
Jim Barrett was too ill to be tried, he had his leg amputated but never
recovered – he was to die on March 22nd. His funeral
took place on March 23rd. The other man (Denis Murphy) was tried on March
9th (see Mar-09-21/4)
and is sentenced to death once he recovered from his wounds. However, on the intervention of Major
Woodley, a local unionist, his sentence was commuted to 25 years’
imprisonments.
