Trial of the IRA Men Captured at Dripsey

Introduction from Chronology

Eight (out of the ten) men captured at the Dripsey ambush (See Jan-28-21/4) are brought before a court martial in Victoria Barracks in Cork City.

More Detail

Before the court are Patrick O'Mahony, Berrings; Timothy McCarthy, Fornaught; Thomas O'Brien, Dripsey; Jeremiah O'Callaghan, Aghabullogue; Daniel O'Callaghan, Dripsey; John Lyons, Aghabullogue; Eugene Langtry, Kilabbey and Denis Sheehan, Dereen, Coachford.  They were charged with levying war against His Majesty which was a charge which carried the death penalty if convicted.  The court adjourned until February 8th – see See Feb-08 to 10-21/1.

Of the other two men captured after the Dripsey ambush, Jim Barrett was too ill to be tried, he had his leg amputated but never recovered – he was to die on March 22nd.  His funeral took place on March 23rd.  The other man (Denis Murphy) was tried on March 9th (see Mar-09-21/4) and is sentenced to death once he recovered from his wounds.  However, on the intervention of Major Woodley, a local unionist, his sentence was commuted to 25 years’ imprisonments.
