Another Escape by Collins
Introduction from Chronology
Collins has another lucky escape from the DMP.
More Detail
Collins had arranged to meet Jameson (who was a British spy) in Batt
O’Connor’s house at 1 Brendan Road, Donnybrook, Dublin. After the meeting,
Jameson left with Liam Tobin.
Jameson had told DMP Assistant Commissioner Redmond about his meeting
with Collins and, naturally, Redmond decided to raid O’Connor’s house and
arrest Collins. As a precursor to the raid, Redmond had posted a detective
nearby from early morning. When the DMP
raiding party ((led by Redmond), arrived at the corner of Brendan’s Road, the
detective informed them that Collins had left with Jameson. (The detective had mistaken Tobin for
Collins.) The raiding party left the scene without entering O’Connor’s home in
which Collins was eating his lunch.
Redmond raided Batt O’Connor’s home the following day (possibly been told by Jameson that Collins lunched there frequently). However, DMP Detective Jim McNamara had warned Collins about the impending raid so he decided to lunch elsewhere. For more on Redmond – see Jan-20-20/2 and Jan-21-20/1.
