The
attack was carried out by 11 IRA men from Castletownroche
Battalion Cork No. 2 Brigade under Thomas Barry (who was Battalion O/C and
Battalion Column commander) and 14 men from the East Limerick Brigade Column
(led by Donnchadh O'Hannigan). One RIC man (Constable Ernest Watkins) was
killed and five wounded and six rifles captured by the attackers. Two wounded RIC men were captured and later
released.
Constable
Watkins was from Monmouth in Wales and was a member of the RIC for just over a
month.
