Attack
on Drumquin RIC Barracks
Introduction from Chronology
Led by Sam O’Flaherty and Dr. J. P.
McGinley, the IRA attack the RIC barracks in Drumquin,
Co. Tyrone resulting in the death of one RIC man (Constable James Munnelly). The RIC man was shot by James McMonagle.
More Detail
The IRA were from the Letterkenny, Ballybofey,
Castlefin and Clady Companies from the Donegal No. 2
and No. 3 Brigades with the assistance of a local volunteer James Curran. They also received assistance from an RIC man
from Killygorden called Johnston.
Three days after this raid, the RIC District Inspector in
Letterkenny, Patrick Walsh, visits Dr McGinley in his surgery and informs him
that he had descriptions of three men who took part in the attack in Drumquin and the descriptions fitted himself and two other
Letterkenny men (Jim Dawson and James McMonagle) who took part in the
raid. However, he informed Dr McGinley
that he was working with Michael Collins and he subsequently gave alibis for
the three men. Abbott says that a
witness said that one IRA man was killed in this attack but this would not seem
to be the case.
