More Detail
Curran
says that Griffin had been placed in a private nursing home by his physician,
Oliver St John Gogarty, after he had suffered a
slight stroke in early August. However, Griffith continued to work.
He says that Griffith had got very bitter towards the end – especially towards
de Valera and Curran quotes him as saying “de Valera is responsible for this –
all of this. There would have been no trouble but for him”. Collins was in Tralee, Co. Kerry at this time
and returns to Dublin when he hears the news of Griffith’s death.
Llyod
George writes to Collins with a glowing tribute to Griffith praising his
“single-minded patriotism, his ability, his sincerity” and his “unremitting labours”. He added that “I trust that his work will go on
to complete success”.
