Brennan and East Clare Brigade
Introduction from Chronology
Raid on Limerick GPO by IRA men
from East Clare led by Michael Brennan nets £1,500.
More Detail
This money is used is used to buy
arms (mostly revolvers) in Dublin with the help of Tom Keogh and members of the
Squad. GHQ disapproved of the raid and removed Brennan from his position
as O/C of the East Clare brigade but they were allowed to keep the money from
the raid for buying arms. Brennan's brother (Austin Brennan) was made
Acting O/C in his place. (According to Brennan, Oscar Traynor of the
Dublin Brigade got Brennan ordered out of Dublin as he was 'spoiling the
market' by offering high prices. However, as "Keogh and the Special
Unit were on bad terms with Traynor and his entourage this only resulted in
renewed efforts on my behalf.”)
