Dublin District of British Army

Introduction from Chronology

Dublin District becomes a British Army Division under Major-General Gerald Boyd (rather than a brigade of the 5th Division).

More Detail

New Dublin District consisted of two provisional brigades - the 24th based at Royal Barracks (covering north Dublin and Meath) and the 25th based in Kilmainham (covering south Dublin and north Wicklow).  The two brigade HQ staffs did not come into being until April 19th 1920.

For the new division’s operational strength in July 1920 - see Townshend (1975), pg 216. For allocation of battalions to the BA’s Dublin District in the period of the WoI, see Sheehan (2007), pgs 81-85. For allocation of battalions to the BA’s 5th Division in November 1919 and Order of Battle and Location List in December, see Sheehan (2009), pgs 143-162).

(The distribution of British army troops in Ireland (with the O/Cs of the various divisions and brigades) in January 1920 is given in Kautt (2014), pgs 26-30.)

Sheehan says 1st January.
