Truce Talks
In
his statement issued on the 9th July, de Valera says “In the negotiations now
initiated your representatives will do their utmost to acquire a just and
peaceful termination of this struggle, but history, particularly our own
history, and the character of the issue to be decided are a warning against
undue confidence”.
On
a side point, Regan (who was a serving RIC officer during the War of
Independence) relates an interesting story of meeting a member of IRA GHQ
during the Truce who told him that GHQ feared that the British had a mole in
their headquarters. Regan comments “I am
inclined to think that the fears were well grounded” (Regan (2007), pg 182).
Unfortunately, Regan does not name his source but it has interesting echoes of
the peace talks in the 1990s.
