More Detail
Among
the attackers were Tommy Donovan (Drangan Battalion O/C, Tipperary South
Brigade), Seamus Robinson, Sean Tracey, Dan Breen (Brigade staff), Sean Hogan,
Ernie O'Malley, Nicholas Moroney, George Hayden (and other Drangan Battalion
men); Ned [O’] Reilly, Jack Ryan, Bill Dwyer and the Hanleys (Rossmore),
Jack Foley (Capt., Drangan Company) and Brian Shanahan. Also, men from
the Callan 7th Battalion of the Kilkenny Brigade took part. Dwyer
and Foley wounded.
The
RIC men, led by Sgt King, were permitted to march out of the village. In his report to the Adjutant General, Treacy (as V/C of South Tipperary Brigade) says
that the Volunteers kept quiet during the attack and, in his opinion, this
encouraged the police to surrender.
