Mulcahy - de Valera Meeting
De Valera was to tell McGarrity
that he no longer felt it was possible for the Treaty to be revised and Mulcahy was (much later) to say that his meeting with de
Valera was to lead him to support the establishment of military courts.
Curran says that his cabinet colleagues (especially O’Higgins) got angry with Mulcahy after hearing that he had met de Valera since they
had decided the previous day that no member would engage in peace negotiations
without cabinet approval and that meeting with de Valera was therefore a break
in collective cabinet responsibility. (Macardle says
meeting took place on 6th.)
